A late-night argument in the early hours of 2009 turned violent
in Jefferson, leading to the arrest of 29-year-old
Martin L. Lopez of West Jefferson.
According to Detective David Witherspoon of the Jefferson
Police Department, there were "two Hispanic males who got
into an argument sometime in the early morning hours of Jan.
1.
"They got into an argument and Lopez shot the other individual
in the arm with a small caliber handgun," Witherspoon said,
noting that the victim's name is currently being withheld.
The shot caused a "pass-through wound," and the
victim was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital, where he was
treated and released.
Witherspoon said that Lopez was arrested an hour and a half
later and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting
serious injury, both felonies. He is currently being held at
the Ashe County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
Witherspoon said that there are conflicting stories on what
caused the argument, but noted that "alcohol is suspected"
as being a factor in the incident. The case is still under investigation.
