Lincoln, Excalibur and a Pack of Dogs

With Abraham Lincoln currently in the news because of President Barack Obama’s inauguration and Illinois ties, a local book taps the controversial notion that Lincoln was born in North Carolina.

Watauga native Anis Ward Jackson has released “Into the Twilight,” a novel based on President Abraham Lincoln’s connections to the Tarheel state. Historical legend places his birth in Rutherford County as the illegitimate son of a wealthy farmer who paid Thomas Lincoln to marry the mother and give the child a name.
Jackson traces this legendary father and his illicit romance with a bondservant, delving into historical details of the 1780s, as well as human relationships.

The book can be ordered from SunnyBrick Publishers, 1357 Brown Road, Sparta, N.C. 28675 for $19.95 plus $3 shipping and handling.

Richard Standbery of Mountain City, Tenn., has released “Excalibur: The Irish Odyssey” through Publish America. It is a modern quest to find Excalibur, the legendary Arthurian sword, before global super-criminals do. The protagonist is the leader of an underground organization of loyalists who are a holdover from the Romanov dynasty of Russia.

William Schwenn of Warrensville has released “Dogs of Meadowbrook,” the true story of a pack of pet dogs and the forging of family bonds. The story is based on Schwenn’s experience in country living, with Schwenn focusing on the dogs, including interpretations of their experiences. Schwenn is a former Clerk of U.S. Bankruptcy Court. His book is available through Publish America.

In the foreword, Schwenn wrote, “My purpose in accurately telling the lives we shared with our dogs of Meadowbrook is to confirm that the really important stuff of life is ridiculously simple, and some of it cannot be rationally explained. Dogs teach us that, if we listen.”

Schwenn writes about assembling his pack, how the dogs played and developed their individual and pack relationships, and various adventures and misadventures of eight dogs, whom Schwenn imbues with human characteristics. The story covers 14 years on a large rural farm and how the dogs affected not just pack life, but the lives of Schwenn and his wife. Schwenn’s book is available in local bookstores and online outlets.

Patricia Schaller, former owner of Heaven Scent Flowers, has released a daily devotional written in a format of short stories inspired by the word of God. Whether it is the loss of a loved one, loneliness, seeking patience or serenity, “Spirit Thoughts” was written to help the reader find peace in their day to day struggles, Schaller said. It’s available online and in local bookstores.
