Swan Lake comes to town Tuesday
Presentation at Farthing will be open to public if school is cancelled

Dancer Lilyan Vego performing with the Carolina Ballet. The company will be in town this week for a children’s production of Swan Lake. If school is cancelled on Tuesday, the performance at Farthing Auditorium will be open to all students.

Because of an impending test or book report due, students in our area have been known to cross their fingers in hope of a snow day. Next week they’ll have an extra incentive for school closures: a chance to see the Carolina Ballet at Farthing Auditorium.

The Carolina Ballet will perform two acts of Swan Lake at Farthing on Tuesday, February 3rd at 9:30 a.m. for students of Watauga County Schools. In the event of a snow day, all students of all ages are invited to attend the event free of charge.

All students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Doors will open at 9 a.m. A sign-in sheet will be in the lobby of Farthing Auditorium in Boone.

Parking will be available in the parking deck on Rivers Street, or if cleared, the bike lane on Rivers Street.

The presentation of the Carolina Ballet’s performance of Swan Lake is made possible by cARTwheels, a project of the North Carolina Arts Council supported through funding by the North Carolina Legislature. It is also being present with support of the Watauga Arts Council.

Carolina Ballet

The Carolina Ballet, founded as the Raleigh Dance Theatre in 1984, was started as a student company to provide performance opportunities for students. In 1993, it made its first small steps toward becoming a professional dance company, the first of its kind in the Research Triangle.

By 1998 the company featured 21 dancers from around the world, selected from a national audition tour. Its first professional performance was a production of George Balanchine’s Square Dance at Cary’s Regency Park, an event that attracted 2,500 people.

During the 2006-07 season, Carolina Ballet joined forces with the North Carolina Dance Theatre, Opera Carolina, and Piedmont Opera in a cARTwheels, a statewide educational initiative sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. Since then Carolina Ballet has presented Swan Lake and other dance works to tens of thousands of students around the state.
