As a High Country native, this community has given
so much to my family and me. Now, I want to make sure
that I give back to this great community with my time,
treasures and talents, he said. That is
how I live united.

The High Country United Way (HCUW) and Appalachian State University
athletics have partnered to host United Way Day in the Holmes
Center during basketball games this Saturday against Furman.
Executive director for HCUW Linda Slade referred to the event
as an awareness-raiser, as opposed to a fundraiser. Through
the partnership half-price tickets can be purchased in advance
for both the womens and mens games. Usually $10
for both, anyone contacting the United Way in advance can purchase
tickets for $5.
A free Live United T-shirt will be awarded to the
first 100 to purchase tickets. Live United is a campaign through
the National United Way, encouraging people to share their stories
of living as a community. The campaigns focus is to encourage
people to be involved in their communities and give back whatever
they can through local organizations for a common good, be it
talent, time or monetary donations.
As a part of United Way Day, the many organizations that benefit
from United Way monies across the High Country have been invited
to set up information tables on the concourse level of the Holmes
Center throughout the day. Slade said this allows donors to
see where the donated funds are distributed and who benefits
from the money.
Slade said the event also allows the organizations and the
HCUW a means to say thank you to those who have
already donated and remind people that during these tough times,
donations are down overall.
The HCUW is nearing the end of its annual fundraising drive.
The campaign closes on March 31, and at last tally, the organization
had raised 65 percent of its goal of $625,000.
The event also serves as the local kick-off of the Live United
campaign. Those interested can stop by the HCUW information
table for the opportunity to pick up a Live United T-shirt.
There is no charge for the T-shirts, as supplies last. Participants
will be asked to share their story of how they live united and,
if willing, have a photograph taken. These stories will be made
into small poster to be displayed in businesses to promote the
Live United theory of working toward a common good.
Assistant athletics director for ASU Samantha Stevens said
United Way Day came about because the university was seeking
ways to partner with the community, as well as get some new
faces in the stands at the basketball games.
The discounted price is available only through advance purchase
by contacting the United Way. The discounted tickets will not
be available at the door.
To purchase tickets, call the HCUW at (828) 265-2111 or stop
by its location in the RBC Centura Bank building at 671 W. King
St. in Boone. Tickets will be held at the will-call office on
game day. The games will begin at 12 p.m. and end at approximately
5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31.
