The Arts Management Organization at Appalachian State
University announces the visit of renowned artists Kate Vogel
and John Littleton.
The artists will present a lecture on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
in the lecture hall of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
Kate Vogel works with her husband, John Littleton. Vogel and Littleton
are known for their exquisite glass creations and primarily their
bag series. These works of art are featured in collections across
the country and the world. Some of these include the Glasmuseet
Ebeltoft in Denmark in 2003, the Craft collection in the White
House, the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian in Washington,
D.C. in 1995 and in 1996 the American Craft Museum in New York
City.
The lecture will focus on the artists process, their influences
and the evolution of their work. When asked why they chose the
medium of glass, they were quoted as saying. Choice, chance,
circumstance, seductive qualities of the material a little
bit of all of the above. We stay with glass because it feels right.
The process allows us to collaborate, start to finish. Glass is
versatile, and we see endless possibilities in it and through
it. Hot glass responds quickly and spontaneously. We freeze its
spontaneous gestures giving life to the finished piece. In our
work we strive to make something that is a personal expression
of our thoughts and experiences.
The couple has lived and worked near the community of Penland
since 1980. Vogel was born in Cambridgeshire, England, and received
a BSA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wis. She also
studied at Santa Reperata Graphic Center in Florence, Italy. John
Littleton was born in Madison, Wis. He received a BSA from the
University of Wisconsin at Madison and studied at the Interlochen
Arts Academy, Interlochen, Mich. Littleton is the son of Harvey
Littleton, who was considered the founder of the American studio
glass movement.
