Christmas in the Mountains Vol. 2 brought
holiday spirit to the High Country and more than $40,000 to the
Hunger and Health Coalition.
The number of CD sales was made possible by the contributions
of so many people in the community. Volunteers gave their
time and talent or made their businesses available for the sale
of the CDs.
The Hunger Coalitions board of directors, along with executive
director Compton Fortuna and staff, want to thank the neighbors
who gave so much to help buy food and medicine for those in need. With
the economy getting worse, food prices rising fast, and the number
of people coming to the Hunger and Health Coalition for help doubling
every month, It was heart warming to see how everyone reached
out to help, a spokesperson said. Proceeds
will go a long way to make many peoples lives just a little
bit easier in these hard times.
The Hunger and Health Coalition thanks the performers who donated
their music to make the CD possible: Jeff Little, Doc Watson,
Todd Wright. Amantha Mill, The Rumple Presbyterian Church Choir,
ASU Jazz Ensemble, Laura Kaufman, Joe Shannon, David Combs and
Gary Prim, Diana and Sarvis Ridge, Mary C. Greene, The Lost Faculties,
and The Kingston Trio.
We want to especially thank Jerrell Little for his help
in securing performers like Jeff Little and Doc Watson for this
years CD, project co-chairwoman Leslie Shavell said.
He was a terrific PR person for the project and we really
appreciate his support.
My personal gratitude goes to all the media who have been
so supportive throughout the whole project. Without all the coverage
on TV and the radio stations, as well as all the newspapers and
magazines, I could not have gotten the message out to so many
in our community. Thank you all for making time and space for
our cause.
With Sunrox donating the graphics and Scott Wynne from Appalachian
State Universitys Hayes School of Music recording and organizing
the music, it was sure to be a success, Shavell said. The
two musicians hard work paid off, along with the help and
hard work of Dean Bill Harbinson and the support of the Hayes
School of Music, which was much appreciated.
This project would have never begun if it had not been for
Crae Mortons idea and all the work he has put into the CD,
Shavell said. With Mamie Mortons computer assistance
and her support, we made this idea work. Thanks to both of you
for all the time you have given.
Shavell also thanked her husband for his patience and all the
effort he put into the project.
I also want to say a special thank you to all of the locations
who sold the CD, she said. We expect to have these
and more locations in the fall for the community to purchase Volume
3.
Work has already begun on Volume 3, which will feature exciting
new songs and performers. Information will be available on the
HHC Web site as it comes to market at www.hungercolation.com.
It seems that there is always hunger and poverty in our
world, Shavell said. We all wish it would end, but
I, for one, am glad I live in a community who cares and does something
about it. Remember that although our Christmas CD is seasonal,
hunger is not. We can use your help all year through.
