The Boone Service League, a community service organization
of local women, is now accepting applications for the annual
Boone Service League High School Scholarship.
This year, Boone Service League will award $2,000 in scholarship
money to interested high school seniors planning to pursue
an undergraduate degree at a university or college in the fall of
2009.
Applications will be accepted online only and are open to students
in Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. Those interested in applying
may do so by going to the Web site www.booneserviceleague.org
and then clicking under the tab Scholarships.
The deadline for all applications is Friday, Feb. 27,
and no applications will be accepted after this date. The
winners will be contacted on the week of March 9. Winners and
one guest are invited, but not required, to attend the Boone
Service Leagues annual Fashion Show and Silent Auction
on April 4 at the Inn at Crestwood, so that members and their
guests may express their congratulations and encouragement to
the winner or winners.
Students interested in applying should submit their information
online at www.booneserviceleague.org. Only on-line applications
will be accepted. Applicants should select one of the two prompts
listed below and prepare an essay not to exceed 500 words. Organizers
suggest applicants prepare their essay in a word processing
program using the word count tool, and copy and paste the essay
into the application. While the content of the essay is the
main concern, reviewers will also be looking at sentence structure,
spelling and grammar. Applicants will receive a confirmation
within 48 hours of the receipt of their application. Those who
do not receive a confirmation should contact Shannon Burroughs,
scholarship committee chairman, directly at shannonburroughs@bellsouth.net.
Essay Prompts
Boone Service League members are committed to raising funds
and using their talents to improve the quality of life for residents
of the High Country. Unfortunately, there is never enough money
or enough hands to take care of all the needs of which we are
aware. We encourage thoughtful and prudent use of the resources
entrusted to us by our donors, supporters, and members. We use
scholarship funds to encourage young adults to pursue a life
of service in their community.
1. If you were a member of a service organization and
given $5,000 and a team of five members, how would you use these
resources to meet a need in the High Country?
OR
2. Describe one service activity in which you participated
in the past 12 months. Were you a leader or a follower? How
did you obtain the resources you needed and how did a person(s)
benefit from you efforts? How were you changed as a result
of your efforts?
The deadline for all applications is Friday, Feb. 27.
