The 10-member ensemble Blazing Bassoons will perform
Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Centers Rosen Concert
Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free. Piano
accompanists are Christina Hayes and Joel King.
The program will feature solo performances by members of the
student ensemble, which is based in the Hayes School of Music.
It also showcases the bassoon, which typically is heard within
an orchestral setting.
The program includes classical as well as contemporary compositions,
including Suite, from Op. 11 & 13 by Gotthilf
Heinrich Kummer, Sicilienne, Op. 78 by Gabriel Fauré,
The Grouchy Bear, Op. 210 by Julius Fucik and Washington
Post by John Philip Sousa.
Four Sketches by Gordon Jacob features the contrabassoon
and piano. The contrabassoon, noted for its low octave range,
is rarely featured as a solo instrument. The bassoon
is a humorous instrument, said music professor Jon Beebe
who teaches bassoon at Appalachian. The program
has a lot of variety and provides students the opportunity to
showcase the results of their work during fall and spring semesters.
