Relay for Life

Appalachian State Universitys basketball teams will
be covered in pink on Monday, Feb. 16, for the mens and
womens basketball games at the Holmes Convocation Center.
While the men battle the College of Charleston and the women will
tear up the courts playing Chattanooga, they will join 600 schools
across the U.S. in a sole mission - to win the fight against cancer.

Jeana Sigmon, ASUs Colleges Against Cancer president, is
excited to see the turnout expected for the annual Think
Pink event. The program will promote advocacy and community
service in the community, which includes one of the groups
largest fundraisers, Relay for Life. Sigmon stressed that everyone
should wear pink in support of cancer survivors and victims to
the womens game at 5 p.m. and the mens game at 7:30
p.m.
Tables will be set up to promote those who have won battles
against cancer and in memory of those who lost their battles,
she said. There will also be tables set up providing pamphlets
and information about Relay for Life.
The group has already had 21 teams sign up for Relay for Life,
and raised $1,800 this year for the American Cancer Society. That
is triple the membership from last year. This years relay
will be April 17 from 6 p.m. until April 18 at 6 a.m. at the Duck
Pond off Stadium Drive.
John Carter, WBTV news anchor and ASU alumni, will be speaking.
and local hit Mike Alvarado Band will be playing during the night.
During halftime of the womens basketball game, there will
be a prettiest in pink half-time show where people
will be chosen out of the audience to sport their pink outfits.
Those who are voted the prettiest in pink will when a prize. There
will also be a silent auction selling signed footballs, basketballs
and baseball jerseys. ASUs dance team will also be face-painting
for children and adults who would love to show their support for
the cause.
Last year, the group raised more than $2,500 during the event,
which was really nice because it was our first one,
Sigmon said. Our goal this year is to raise $3,000. Weve
changed a lot of things around. Its a lot different this
ear.
Sigmon decided to join in the fight against cancer when members
of her family were diagnosed with the deadly disease.
It feels good to be able to support that and help others,
she said. We are really encouraging not only students to
come but the community, and this is an event to really get the
community involved.
She said last year was an encouragement to see the community and
the school join together and provide the support needed to reach
their goal.
Think Pink will be an inviting environment for people who
want to learn and get involved, she said.
