The Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State
University will present the trial scene from the Jerome Lawrence
and Robert E. Lee classic Inherit the Wind Feb. 12-14
and 19-21. Performances begin at 7 p.m. in I.G. Greer Studio Theatre
on campus.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased by calling (828) 262-3063,
online at www.theatre.appstate.edu/performances/box.html, or from
the Valborg Theatre box office weekdays from 1-5 p.m. The performance
is part of Appalachians Darwin Bicentennial Celebration
and consists of the trial scene from the play, with additional
short vignettes created for the production to put the scope of
the trial into context.
The vignettes range in style from vaudevillian performances to
hip-hop dance, with the intention of putting the conversation
about Darwins theories of where we came from
in a modern perspective.
Dr. Ray Miller with the Department of Theatre and Dance directs
and choreographs the production.
There will be a short talk with the cast and a guest professor
following each performance. The talks will feature Appalachian
professors from academic disciplines such as anthropology, religion
and biology.
The production has been cross-gender cast, and has female actresses
playing the roles of lawyers and other men involved in the Scopes
trial in order to further emphasize the relevance of the plays
themes to today.
The cast includes Meredith Hunter as Drummond, Jordan Lance as
Brady, Lindsay Laws as Mrs. Brady, Shanda Jacobs as Davenport,
William Gwyn as Cates, Katie White as Rachel, Brian Seagroves
as Hornbeck and Kerry Dunlap as the Judge. The chorus includes
Lindsay David, Cady Childs, Matt Lucas and Brett Stafford.
April Miller is the costumer, Sean Plane is the lighting/sound
designer, Erica Hogan is the stage manager, Alex Genther
is assistant stage manager and Megan Mabry is the dramaturg.
