Appalachian Concert Band performs Feb. 23

A program of folksongs and marches for band will be presented Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University.

Performing will be Appalachian’s Concert Band directed by John Stanley Ross.

The program opens with “An Original Suite” by Gordon Jacob. Written in 1928, the piece is Jacob’s first work for band. Also on the program is “Yorkshire Ballad” inspired by composer James Barnes’ visit to the Yorkshire Dales of northern England.

The band also will perform “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” by John Phillip Sousa, written for the Shriners and once performed by 6,200 band members; “On a Southern Hymnsong” by David Holsinger based on the spiritual “There Is a Balm in Gilead”; and “Allerseelen, Opus 10, No. 8” by Richard Strauss and arranged by Albert Davis.

The program concludes with “The Sinfonians” by J. Clifton Williams. The composition was commissioned by the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America.
