Expressive workshops at Carlton Gallery

The 27th Winter Exhibition continues at Carlton Gallery with paintings, mixed media collage, sculpture, blown glass, fine woodworking, jewelry and pottery on exhibit through March 15.

The gallery represents local, regional and international artists and is one of the largest fine art galleries in the region.

The 9th annual Workshop Series at Carlton Gallery begins in March with an “Open Your Heart with Art” Expressive Art Workshop taught by local artist, gallery owner/curator, Toni Carlton.

For more than 15 years, Carlton has been creating art as a means to deepen her connection to the divine and express the oneness of all. In this expressive art workshop, Carlton intends to help participants open their hearts through the creative process with the modalities of art, music, movement and writing to explore and express passion, joy, love and connection.

A refreshing and uplifting workshop is planned by local artist Irmaly Brackin.

Brackin’s “Oil Relief on Grass Cloth” workshop creates two-dimensional art works on fibrous paper, Chinese grass cloth. Composition, texture and color through the exploration of a hot oil and wax media with imaginative or representational images are learned in this workshop. The completed paintings will be similar to batiking, which includes manipulation of the painting to form cracks and crevices, then dyeing it to achieve unpredictable and exciting works of art.

The essence of Brackin and her art is vibrant. Brackin said, “I believe my art expresses my freedom. I’m a free spirit. I enjoy life and feel that life’s energy propels me into expression.”

Brackin’s paintings are surrealistic, but are more primitive than the technological surrealism of Dali. Her art features people and animals rather than inanimate objects.

“This personal energy reflected in imaginative, colorful and swirling images in her collages dances in joy to a wild beat,” a gallery spokesperson said. “Brackin’s focus is on interaction, and her art work is filled with spontaneity and urgency.”

Brackin earned a B.F.A. from Appalachian State University and an M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina. Brackin’s vibrant art has collected numerous awards and honors, has gallery representation in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, and is in many private collections.

The Winter Exhibition runs through March 15, and art of the gallery artists conducting classes during the 9th annual Workshop Series is on exhibit at this time.

The gallery is located on N.C. 105 South, 10 miles south of Boone and 7 miles north of Linville. Winter hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday or by appointment.
