MTP photog wins press award

For Mountain Times Publications photo editor Mark Mitchell, a picture’s worth more than a thousand words. It’s also worth an award.

Mitchell was recognized by the N.C. Press Association (NCPA) for his photograph, “Kilt-flyin’ action,” depicting two wrestlers in mid-air (and tackle) from last year’s Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.

Mitchell’s photo won third place in the general news photography category of the NCPA’s community news division for circulations less than 10,000.

“Mark consistently produces amazing photos, and we are lucky to have him on our team,” Watauga Democrat editor Jason Reagan said of Mitchell, who attended the NCPA awards ceremony in Cary on Thursday.

The NCPA also presented an award named after the late Hugh Morton, avid photographer and founder of Grandfather Mountain. The Hugh Morton Photographers of the Year awards were presented to Michael McLoone and Andrew Craft of The Cary News and Fayetteville Observer, respectively.
