The scholarship is given to students who show outstanding leadership in and out of school. Students who display traits like honesty, timeliness, dependability, trustworthiness and respect for others are likely candidates for the scholarship. The Foundation for Good Business formed by Rufus Edmisten, former North Carolina Attorney General and Secretary of State, wanted to create a scholarship for students who have overcome personal trials and who are held in high esteem by their counselors and teachers.

“Kelly is a great student. She is typically an honor roll student,” Candice Walker, sophomore counselor at Watauga High School, said. “She’s a really well-rounded, great kid with a wonderful attitude. I think this scholarship is just another way of showing how neat she really is.”

Greene lives with mother, Teresa Greene, who is a teacher’s assistant at Hardin Park Elementary School, and is the daughter of the late Charles Green.

Her $2,000 scholarship will be granted each year she attends a university. Liberty University, Appalachian State University and Kings College are currently the three colleges she is considering attending to further her education. Watauga High School will also be granted $200 from the scholarship.

“I’ve always wanted to do something big,” she said.

Greene hopes to further her education even after college to peruse her dream of child pediatrics.

“I’ve always loved children,” she said. “I want to be a pediatric surgeon.”

The scholarship was formed in honor of Edmisten’s late parents, Walter and Nellie Edmisten, who contributed to the Watauga community throughout their lives. Their former farm is the site of the new Watauga High School, and they donated the land along the South Fork of the New River for the Boone greenway trail.

The purpose of the scholarship is to give the student an opportunity for success and achievement. The foundation strives to positively reinforce good behavior through this program, while motivating students to become contributing members of society.

In her spare time, Greene practices clarinet and cello and is a member of her church’s youth group. “I love to go to youth group,” she said.

She has been playing the clarinet for four years and the cello for five. She plays in her high school orchestra and band. She is also a member of JOOI, (Junior Optimist Octagon International) and WHAT (Watauga High Against Tobacco). Greene is a Girl Scout and volunteers at Watauga Medical Center on a regular basis.

Family is very important to Greene, who said she takes nothing for granted. Members of her church recommended her as a recipient of this scholarship.

“I’m ecstatic, and I’m so happy,” she said. “I’m thankful that people think of me in that way.”
