Unless local schools close up on Friday, students can
expect to show up on Saturday as snow days in Watauga County continue
to pile up.
Icy roads and snow in some areas prompted school officials to
cancel classes on Wednesday after first delaying them for two
hours.
For the school year, Watauga County has endured 14 snow days;
however one was made up on Dec. 19 bringing the total to 13.
The decision to open schools on Saturday is based on the
snow make-up plan, which calls for schools to open on Saturdays
after 10 days of school have been missed due to inclement weather,
said schools public information director Marshall Ashcraft.
The policy states a Saturday make-up day cannot follow a missed
Friday so all decisions are literally up in the air until then.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service called
for a chance of snow showers late Thursday evening into Friday
morning with a low around 17.
The make-up policy also states that no more than two Saturdays
can be used per month and no more than two consecutive Saturdays
will be used.
If a school day is missed Monday through Thursday, the day could
be made up on Saturday, but if the cancellation were on Friday,
it wouldnt be made up the following day.
The missed days could not be carried over into Saturdays of later
weeks, said school superintendent Marty Hemric. Classes cant
be held six days in a week.
