The 2009 Ashe County Schools Spelling Bee was held on Feb.
10 at Westwood Elementary School.

Contestants consisted of one student as each grade level fourth
through eighth from each of the elementary schools and the middle
school for a total of eleven. The Spelling Bee winner was 8th
grader Anna Wooten from Ashe County Middle School.
A perpetual spelling bee trophy presented by Dr. Lee Beckworth,
Ashe County Board of Education member, was given to Anna, along
with a trophy for her to keep. The perpetual spelling bee trophy
will be displayed at Ashe County Middle School for the next
year in honor of Anna. She will compete in the regional spelling
bee to be held on March 22, at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial
Coliseum. Runner-up was Eli Blevins.
Grade champions included Elisha Little fourth grade at Blue
Ridge Elementary; Brooklyn Roten fifth grade at Blue Ridge Elementary;
Victoria Reed sixth grade at Blue Ridge Elementary; Eli Blevins
seventh grade; and Anna Wooten eighth grade.
Ashe County Middle School champion was Anna Wooten; Blue Ridge
Elementary champion was Victoria Reed; Mountain View Elementary
champion was Jacob Bledsoe; Westwood Elementary had a three
way tie: Grace Milller, fourth grade, Becca Bowers, fifth grade
and Rachel Dillard, sixth grade.
