Slopes stay cool amid warmer climate

Hawksnest
Hawksnest will be closed this week due to the warm weather. The resort will open its doors this weekend March 13-15 with hopes that the forecast will bring back the cold. As of March 10, it was 56 degrees Fahrenheit with temperatures expected to drop to the low 40s on Friday and Saturday.

Beech Mountain
Beech Mountain is having its Spring Fever Blowout. Until the end of the ski season, day and twilight lift tickets are $20 each, and half-day and nightlife tickets are $10 each seven days a week. All other mid-week specials and group rates will end except for ladies day.

Beech Mountain will be throwing its end-of-the-season party on Sunday, March 15. Beech will host a four-front Southern-fried slopestyle competition with prizes for all divisions. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the competition will begin at 12 p.m.

During this event, there will also be a pond skimming competition. Registration begins at 2 p.m. and the competition begins at 3 p.m. Both events will cost participants $30 total, but for those just interested in pond skimming, it will only cost $5.

As of March 10, Beech’s surfaces are wet-granular with a 28-70 inch base. Currently, eight out of 15 slopes are open and five out of 10 lifts are operational. For updated slope information, visit www.skibeech.com

Sugar Mountain
Looking for Easter festivities? Sugar Mountain is having its annual Easter Egg hunt Sunday, March 22 on the slopes. Put on bunny ears and bring a basket to try and find the golden egg holding a 2009-10 season pass.
Even though the temperature is rising, ski season is not over yet. As of March 10, Sugar’s slopes conditions are loose and frozen granular with 20 slopes open and four lifts operational. For updated slope information, visit www.skisugar.com/conditions

Sugar Mountain will spin its Spyder Sample sale. Customers may receive 30 percent off all 2009-2010 Spyder sample items, and 60 percent off other Spyder sample items from previous years. Appalachian Ski Mountain
For the 2009-10 ski season, Appalachian Ski Mountain and Cataloochee Ski Area will be offering reciprocal pass holder discounts. Appalachian members will receive $10 off Cataloochee ski tickets any day or night with a $10 minimum ticket rate.

Appalachian members will also receive a student rate for the Banff Mountain Film Festival, hosted by Appalachian State University’s outdoor program. The festival will be held at Farthing Auditorium Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28. Prices for members will be $7.

Appalachian Terrain Park will be holding eight Fresh Friday events March 20 at 7 p.m. The event is free with a purchase of a ski ticket and open to skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Registration begins at 5 p.m. and will be held at the Candied Appal.

Prizes will be awarded to standout participants by Boardparadise. It is a chance for everyone to come and show off their stuff with a chance of winning free prizes.

As far as the slopes, Appalachian has all their slopes and lifts open and operational. Their surface conditions as of March 10, are groomed with 71-100 inches of base. For updated ski reports, visit www.appskimtn.com/themountain.php.
