WKSK 580 AM walked away the winner at the 2009 Small Business
of the Year award luncheon on Tuesday,
 |
March 17. The event, which was held in Hensley Hall at West
Jefferson United Methodist Church, marked the second time that
WKSK has been named the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce's Small
Business of the Year.
Bob Washburn, chairman of the member services committee for
the chamber, said that WKSK was chosen "because of the
long history that they have had of community service. There
were probably more great candidates this year than we've had
in past years, but they just edged everybody out a little bit."
Washburn added that they also felt it was "an appropriate
selection" since WKSK will also celebrate their 50th anniversary
this year.
The award was presented by Maria Whaley of Ashe Woodworking,
Inc., the 2008 Small Business of the Year winner. Candidates
for the award are judged on the following criteria: being a
chamber member of good standing; having fewer than 25 employees;
having been in business for no less than three years; providing
a quality product and practicing excellent customer service;
and enhancing the community and contributing to the quality
of life in Ashe County.
When presenting the award, Whaley said that WKSK "has contributed
to the community in so many ways, with both personal and community
involvement ranging from service on the hospital board to providing
invaluable exposure to organizations and agencies providing
services and support to our local residents."
For Jan Caddell, owner and operator of WKSK, the award was deemed
"very neat" and greatly appreciated by the entire
staff.
They previously won the award in 1993, due primarily to the
radio coverage they provided during a blizzard. While most Ashe
County residents were stuck at home, WKSK provided coverage
of news, weather and road conditions.
Caddell noted that the goal of WKSK is "serving the community.
"We build a field and they'll come play on it," he
said. "We provide, hopefully, a service to the community,
not only advertising but community service and public service.
It's worked for us for 50 years and hopefully it will work for
us for another 50."
