Like, POP Rocks will be so 80s, totally
By Tiffany Allison
Teased hair, leg warmers, parachute pants and shoulder pads
bring back any fond memories?
If the answer is Yes, join the High Country Womens
Fund for its spring POP Rocks party fundraiser and teleport
back to the eighties where neon and hairspray ruled the fashion
scene.
Break out the spandex, fishnets and parachute pants and get
down to hits from the 1980s on Thursday, April 2 from 8:30 p.m.
to midnight at the Dragon Fly Theater and Pub. Participants
must be 18 and older.
Advanced tickets will be sold for $10, but tickets will be on
sale at the door for $15. VIP tickets will be for $30 and will
include a free drink ticket, gift bag and 10 free raffle tickets.
All tickets may be purchased at Black Bear Books, Dragon Fly
Theater and Pub, the Jean Pool or online at www.highcountrywomensfund.org.
The Design will perform live 80s hits and prizes will be awarded
for the best 80s costume. The HCWF will be hold a raffle with
donations from local business.
Proceeds will go towards the HCWF mission to aid women in the
journey towards self-sufficiency. What started as an initiative
of the High Country United Way, has blossomed into a women-run
organization that has successfully served women of all ages
in difficult areas of life including transportation, child care,
education, housing, personal needs and prevention.
Responsible for Avery and Watauga counties, HCWF supports women
by bridging financial gaps and providing service projects to
encourage younger women to get involved with the community.
Some examples of service projects sponsored by the HCWF are
LEAD and LIFT. LEAD, leadership, Environment and Agricultural
Discoveries, is a summer camp and monthly mentoring program
for middle school girls interested in science.
Leadership Initiative for Female Teens (LIFT) is a weekly group
meeting for at risk high school girls. The idea behind these
programs is to connect youth with older women who can provide
knowledge, encouragement and hope for young women struggling
with lifes issues.
HCWF just completed a service project Feb. 21 called Open
Your Hear, Open Your Closet, which provided 15 local women
with professional clothing. Women from all walks of life including
college students, job seekers, homeless mothers and young mothers
came together and shopped at the Hunger & Health Coalitions
Professional Clothing Closet. Food boxes and door prizes were
handed out through the event.
