Carlton Gallery plans workshop series

The 9th annual Workshop Series is under way at Carlton Gallery, having just finished the first Expressive Art workshop with Toni Carlton.

In line for other expressive and mixed media workshops are Mary Dobbin and Vae Hamilton. Both are long standing gallery artists and both reside in Caldwell County.

Dobbin’s work includes oils on canvas, figure drawing and mixed media collage combining many different techniques.

She will instruct “Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain” on July 7, 8, 9, 10. In this workshop, participants will explore techniques using pencil, charcoal, and graphite along with exercises to enable seeing and drawing in the “artist-mode.”

Beginning or experienced students will explore techniques using pencil, charcoal and graphite to ignite their drawing abilities and help further refine their drawing development.

Dobbin is currently an art instructor at Caldwell Community College in Lenoir and teaches workshops throughout the region. Her art work is in many corporate and private collections across North Carolina and other parts of the United States.

In the Still Life Workshop on August 4, 5, & 6, participants will explore the abstract elements of composition, along with values, shadows and highlights.

Long term teacher and gallery artist Hamilton returns to the workshop series, offering classes in Mixed Media Collage. Hamilton’s “Brush and Beyond” workshops begin June 17-19, followed by another set on Aug. 24-27 and Oct. 14-16, incorporating nontraditional media, such as acrylic gels, texturing mediums, collage transfers and “collected” materials.

Hamilton is a full time artist with over 30 years’ experience, teaching workshops throughout the Southeast and has won many awards for her unique art.

Each workshop is a typical 3 or 4 day event.

For more information about the Workshop Series or seasonal exhibitions, visit www.carltonartgallery.com or call (828) 963-4288. The gallery is located at 10360 N.C. 105 S, 10 miles south of Boone and 7 miles north of Linville. Winter hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday or by appointment.
