Farthing Auditoriums Catherine J. Smith Gallery. Gallery
hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information,
call (828) 262-7338.
A reception will be held Friday, April 3, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
with refreshments and live entertainment by musician Stephon
LaMar. Awards in various media categories will be announced
by Vice Chancellor of Student Development Cindy Wallace. Marilyn
Smith, Department of Art interim chairperson, will announce
scholarship recipients. The awards ceremony will begin
at 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
The works included in Art Expo 2009 were selected from more
than 700 entries displayed during an open house in Wey Hall
in February. Guest juror Terry Dowell-Dennis, assistant curator
of education for the Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC-Greensboro,
selected the artworks for exhibition. Dowell-Dennis also
selected award winners in each media category: clay; drawing,
fibers, foundations/fundamentals, graphic design 2D, graphic
design 3D/4D, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking
and sculpture. In addition to the jurors awards,
prizes will be given for Faculty Selection and Students
Selection in each category, based on voting during the
open house.
More than 80 student volunteers from the Student Art League,
Arts Management Organization, foundations art classes and the
Catherine J. Smith Galley worked to make this event possible.
In addition, senior graphic design major Jaron D. Strom created
the design for the prospectus, poster and postcard. Senior art
management and art history major Kelley Wenner was the expos
student coordinator. Jeana Klein served as Art Expo director
with committee members Diane Hodack, Sean Matthews, Jody Servon
and Jason Watson.
