ACHS Varsity Baseball Wins One, Drops Two

The Ashe County High School varsity baseball team returned to winning fashion on Tuesday, March 31, when

they hosted the Alleghany Trojans in West Jefferson. The game didn't start out well, with Alleghany scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Huskies took control of the game by scoring 12 unanswered runs over the next five innings to earn a 12-2 victory.

"We came out and we hit the ball well," said Head Coach Ronnie Pruitt. "We were aggressive at the plate and put the ball in play. We did a good job of moving the runners around and getting them in scoring position, and Cory Roten did a good job of pitching."

Pruitt added that the win "brought the morale up. They were glad to get a win."

The Huskies' match against West Wilkes in Miller's Creek on Wednesday, April 1, was the opposite of Tuesday for Ashe County: they took a 1-0 lead when senior Ethan Wyatt's single drove in Cory Roten in the top of the second inning, but the Huskies were unable to cross the plate again en route to a 7-1 defeat.

Despite the loss, Pruitt said the team showed improvement and the final score "didn't indicate what the game was really like." He said he liked "the fact that we did, overall, put the ball in play better than we have been. But we didn't do it at the right times - like when we had the bases loaded with one out" in the top of the fifth inning.

He noted that the "defense is playing very well" and "made some outstanding plays in the field that kept us in the ballgame."

After the two non-conference matches, the Huskies visited Forbush on Friday, April 3, in search of their first conference win. The team's battled throughout, exchanging the lead several times in the first three innings before a four-run fourth inning gave Forbush a 7-2 advantage. The Huskies cut the deficit to 7-4 in the top of the sixth inning, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 10-4.

The Huskies made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs to cut the Forbush lead to two before Forbush was able to earn the third out and end the game.

The loss at Forbush dropped the Huskies to 0-5 in the Mountain Valley Conference and 4-6 overall. The results of a home game against Wilkes Central, scheduled for Thursday, April 9, were unavailable at press time. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, but was delayed due to snow. The Huskies will then host Surry Central on Tuesday, April 14.
