The beginning stages of utility work on the U.S. 421 and
King Street widening project will begin on Monday with the closure
of a section of East King Street.
East King Street from Hardin Street (U.S. 321) to the N.C. 105
Extension intersection will be closed for through traffic Monday
through Thursday, April 13-16 to allow crews to begin clearing
vegetation and trees for the relocation of utilities. The closure
will begin at approximately 9 a.m. on Monday.
The project is a 24-hour closure to through traffic for each day.
The completion time has not been released. Officials with the
N.C. Department of Transportation said the project is affected
by weather, although if the contractor completes work early, the
road could re-open before Thursday.
A statement issued by N.C. DOT said the work is being done the
week Watauga County schools will be closed for spring break and
Appalachian State University has a two-day holiday planned in
order to lessen the impact on traffic.
East King Street will be accessible from N.C. 105, Hardin Street,
Oak Street, Hillside Drive and Horn in the West Drive for those
who live in the area or need to conduct business at a location
along the closed section of the road.
