Visual arts winners launched for Shooting Stars

After months of rehearsing and auditioning, 25 acts have been chosen for Shooting Stars 2009, Friday, April 24, at ASU’s Farthing Auditorium.

Now in its 11th year, Shooting Stars showcases the talents of Watauga County students. All work is independently judged by professionals, who insist that the performers meet a number of different criteria, including stage presence, talent and originality.

In addition to the performing arts portion of the program, visual artists are also in the program.

The artwork is on display at the Boone Mall and pieces will be chosen for inclusion in the 2009 show. The art winners will be interviewed and their work shown during the performance April 24.

Many of the students are donating their artwork to the Watauga Education Foundation and it will be sold at an evening reception and dinner, at Hound Ears Club, along with pieces created especially for the foundation, by many renowned artists.

Tickets for Shooting Stars are on sale now at BB&T locations and Farthing Auditorium at $10 for the general public and $5 for Watauga County schools students and employees.

Shooting Stars is the Watauga Education Foundation’s primary fundraiser. The foundation will also present the Shooting Stars Golf Classic scheduled for May 15 at Hound Ears Club.

Since its inception 19 years ago, the Watauga Education Foundation has allocated more than $600,000 in funding to supplement state and local education budgets, providing WCS students with innovative programs, teachers with scholarships and the community with a strong partnership for education.
