The Ashe County Friends of Agriculture and the N.C. Extension
Office will present an afternoon of equestrian
 |
competition on Saturday, April 18, with the Extreme Mountain
Cowboy Race at the Agriculture Expo Center in West Jefferon.
The timed event will feature an obstacle course of between eight
and 10 obstacles that riders will have to navigate their horse
through.
Charles Young, an Agriculture Extension Agent for Ashe County,
said that the event pits riders against "obstacles that
you would not normally see on a trail, but they're fun to do
on a horse anyway.
"What makes it fun and a little different than a normal
trail class or horse show is that it's a timed event,"
he continued." Any time you put speed into something with
a horse, or the attempt at speed, it gets to be rather interesting
... you're competing against each other, but you're competing
primarily against the clock."
The course will feature obstacles like walking across a tarp
(which is harder than it sounds), opening gates or throwing
a lasso over a target.
The race will be divided into four age divisions: ages eight
and under, nine to 13 and 14 to 18. There will also be a division
for adults to compete in.
Registration for the event will begin at 10 a.m., and the race
will start, beginning with the younger divisions, at 11 a.m.
The cost to compete in the event depends on the age of the rider:
it's $5 for ages 13 and under, $10 for ages 14 to 18 and $25
for adults. There is no admission fee for spectators.
