Local students speak out at Optimist oratorical contest

Winners have been chosen in the Boone Optimist Club’s annual oratorical contests for area students.

Receiving awards were in the boys’ division were: Matt Colvalt, first runner-up; Christian Ludwig, second runner-up; and Jordan Williamson, winner.

In the girls’ division, winners were Jessie DeArmas, first runner- up; Savananna Walls, second runner-up; and Erica Khalil, winner.

The contest was held March 26 at the Optimist Clubhouse on State Farm Road.

Students who turn 16 prior to Dec. 31, 2009 were eligible.

The Boone Optimist Club has held this contest for several years now, with the top speakers receiving a medallion for first, second and third place.

First place winners for the boys’ and girls’ competition also won a $100 savings bond. First place winners will now advance on to the regional contest that will be held in Lenoir on April 16 at 6 p.m. at the Lenoir Optimist Clubhouse.

Each contestant that advances on to the district level of the contest could win a $1,500 scholarship.

This year, 11 students participated in the contest.

Judges for the event are local professionals, such as Pam Henson, Clinical Profession of Communication Disorders at Appalachian State University; Ryan Lucas, a junior in ASU’s communication department; and Mary Moretz, retired English and social studies teacher at Watauga High School, as well as retired director of the Extended Day School and Pioneer Adademy.

Moretz is currently chairman of the Community Cares Commission and a former Watauga County commissioner.

The Boone Optimist Club was chartered on Jan. 20, 1959.
