Boone Drug is looking for special deliveries made more than
50 years ago.
Boone Drug Downtown opened in 1919 and, before it was a pharmacy,
it had a doctors office upstairs.
Were looking for people who were born upstairs and
we want to highlight them, Carrie Phillips said. Were
planning a celebration for the store being 90 years old.
The doctors offices continued to operate through the 1960s,
with three hospital rooms that the patients
families supplied firewood for heating, and several other businesses
have been located upstairs.
Phillips said they knew of at least one person who had been
born outside the drug store, but they also want people who might
have stories of the buildings early history.
Joe Miller, the fourth owner of the business, was born outside
the store and his interest in selling art supplies blossomed
into Cheap Joes Art Stuff.
The Boone Drug Downtown is one of 12 locations in the locally
owned chain. It was founded by Dr. George Kelly Moose as a pharmacy
and soda fountain, with a lunch grill added in the 1950s.
Anyone with information on Boone Drug births can call Phillips
