Baldwin Brings ‘Learning Through Song’ to Playhouse Saturday

Former Watauga County Teacher of the Year and professional singer/songwriter Lisa Baldwin will entertain children at The Children’s Playhouse this Saturday, April 25, at 10:30 am.

The concert celebrates the release of Baldwin’s new CD for children, We’re Learning Through Song.

The concert will be free to Playhouse members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse ($5 per person). The CD will be available for purchase at the concert and a percentage will be donated to The Children’s Playhouse.

Baldwin, who has more than 27 years teaching experience, has taken her educational children’s music program, Learning Through Song, to child development centers, libraries, schools, community programs, and festivals. Locally, she has been popular with kids at past performances at the Watauga County Public Library and The Children’s Playhouse.

Baldwin’s highly interactive program combines singing, playing instruments, reading, movement, and other activities both fun and educational. Baldwin accompanies herself on guitar, while introducing children to a variety of traditional and unusual songs. Many old favorites, such as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” and “She Be Coming Around the Mountain,” appear on her CD with updated, clever lyrics. The CD will be available for $12, with $2 for every sale donated to The Children’s Playhouse.

Playhouse executive director Kathy Parham said, “Lisa’s performances are always a rollicking good time and we are very excited to have her back at The Children’s Playhouse.”

Upcoming Programs at The Children’s Playhouse

Another Playhouse favorite, Kristen Kissik, will be offering her last session of preschool and early elementary creative movement this month before she moves out of the area.

Kids are invited to join the fun playing parachute games, moving like animals, and dancing with silk scarves.

Kristen Kissik has more than 17 years experience teaching movement and dance to all ages, from preschool to college. Classes will begin April 23 and run through May 27. The preschool class will be offered on Wednesday mornings at 10 and a class for kids aged 4-6 will be offered at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. Registration required; call (828) 263-0011 for details and to sign up.

The Playhouse is also seeking students for a new preschool tumbling class to be offered by Jeff Brock, a gymnastics teacher with years of experience. “Please contact us with your preferred day and time if you are interested,” Parham said.

Other ongoing programs offered by The Children’s Playhouse include Toddler Time offered every Thursday at 9:15 a.m. and Baby Lap Time offered every Friday at 9:15 a.m. Free monthly story times and Musikgarten sessions are also offered.
