Cloudy skies were not enough to keep approximately 160 golfers
away from Mountain Aire Golf Club on

Saturday, May 2, for the 14th annual Carl Hagel Memorial Golf
Tournament. The tournament serves as the primary fundraiser
for the 4-H Ashe Youth Connection, a mentoring group that connects
at-risk youth with role models.
Debbie Smith, 4-H Program Associate for Ashe Youth Connection,
said that attendance "was just slightly up from previous
years" despite the current economic crisis.
"As far as the economy goes, we were very much aware of
it," said Smith. "But in this particular tournament,
it did not seem to have an impact on us."
As of Tuesday, May 5, Smith said the final fundraising figures
were not available but noted that "we were able to meet
tournament goals."
Smith later added that the funds raised will help pay for education,
group activities, supplies and volunteer recognition.
Tournament organizer Lanny Landry said it was a "very successful
tournament" that was "as good as all the other years.
"It's a tournament that people really support," he
continued. "We filled the golf course up twice, morning
and afternoon, and that was what we had hoped for. We were concerned
about it, but my golfers came through. They really came and
supported us, and even though the weather looked iffy they still
came out."
The tournament winners in the net division were: first place
