On Saturday, April 25, the Watauga High School Student Council held its ninth annual Mr. WHS Pageant.

The 27 male contestants were competing for the coveted title of Mr. WHS. The sold-out show, which was directed by student body treasurer Celeste Caton, honored and raised money for five families – the families of Tim Edwards, Barney Arnette, Jimmy Roberts, Lindsey Johnson and Will Dicus.

To compete, each contestant is required to raise at least $200. The 35 members of student council are also required to raise $200 each. With money still coming in, the total raised from the show so far is just over $39,000. This money will be divided among the five families.

The judges for this year’s pageant were Diane Drum, Ted Drum, Sarah Miller and Rob Sanders. They scored the contestants in three areas – animal wear, surf-n-turf wear and talent.

Following the scoring in the first round, the top seven contestants were selected – Ashton Caton, Danny Rosenberg, Cameron Haas, Ian Boyd, Dylan Russell, Ben Roberts and Gavin Wallace. After the question-and-answer segment, the judges selected Ben Roberts as the 2009 Mr. WHS.

Other winners were Cam Haas as Mr. Money-Maker, the contestant who raised the most money; Ahston Caton as Mr. Congeniality, voted on by the contestants; Cam Haas as People’s Choice; Will Barbour and Haas as Kids’ Choice, chosen by Luke, Landon, Laiken and Lindsey Johnson; and Spenser Hallmark, Matt Anderson and Barbour as Four-Year Participants, who have competed in the pageant for all four years of high school.
