Dixon brings purses to ArtWalk

Anne Dixon grew up in Long Island, N.Y. before spending some time in Boston and Washington D.C., finally settling down in Boone.

She studied communications and English at Boston University. Dixon has never had formal art training – selling her work is an all-new challenge for her that she enjoys greatly. She has always had an interest in making art, be it painting or playing music, but it is only in the last year that she has taken up knitting.

Her artistic creations are inspired by patchworks – some things she comes to on her own while others she has seen somewhere that she tries to tweak and make into her own personal style. Dixon always wanted to learn how to knit, and she particularly loves handbags. Her signature felt purse was actually her first knitting project and is one that she keeps coming back to in different styles.

Many of her pieces take a few hours, but Dixon enjoys that pace; it keeps things always changing and allows for a frequent sense of accomplishment. Lately, she has been working on adorning each bag with wool designs and also expanding her selection to include note cards, gift tags and holiday-themed purses.

Her purses are made in a step-by-step process. She first knits them and then felts the purses by sticking them in a washing machine until the materials have fused together to give them a nice, soft finish. Afterwards, she shapes and dries each purse. It is a fun and entertaining process for her to watch each bag shrink down and take shape. She has several colors and designs ranging from everyday wear to special holiday bags with themes, including Christmas bows and Jack-o-Lantern faces.

Her new line of note cards and gift tags are another great way for Dixon to show her artistic diversity. Using stamps and fanciful creations, her note cards offer cute sentiment for friends and family to stay in touch or just say “hello,” while her colorful gift tags are ideal details to add to any present.

Dixon finds inspirations for her paper goods from the old Southern etiquette of days gone by. She feels it is still important to show appreciation and thoughts through handwritten correspondence, and her updated take on this tradition lives on through her work.

Anne Dixon’s new booth location is on ArtWalk’s main level. With three and a half floors and more than 300 local, regional and national artists, ArtWalk is located at 611 W. King St. (across from Mast General Store) Boone, N.C. 28607. Though ArtWalk is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m, customers may shop all the time at the gallery’s online store. ArtWalk continually welcomes new artists of all media and ages to inquire about individual gallery booths for rent.
