A community meeting was held on April 30 by the friends, family
and co-workers of Bradley Swift to organize fundraisers to benefit
the 24-year-old Boone Police officer diagnosed with leukemia.
Swift entered Wake Forest Baptist Memorial Hospital in Winston
Salem in late April for treatment. Chemotherapy and other treatments
are expected to last 4-6 weeks, with Swift to be out of work
for approximately six months. He is expected to make a full
recovery.
Friends and family are organizing multiple fundraisers to help
cover the costs of treatment and assist in other expenses during
his illness. Approximately 50 people were present at the initial
meeting to organize into committees for the upcoming events.
A raffle is underway with multiple prizes donated by local businesses.
Tickets are $10 each. Among the prizes there are a leather chair
from Carroll Leather Goods, an engraved Boston Rocker from Boone
Industries, four adult passes for Tweetsie Railroad, a teeth
whitening offered by Dr. Alvin Jenkins and Dr. Emily Stopper
of Mountain Town Dental, a Makita drill and flashlight kit from
New River Building Supply, a Burts Bees basket of goodies
from Mast General Store, a $100 gift certificate for Haircut
101, four oil changes from Mack Brown Inc., a $50 gift certificate
to Glidewells Restaurant, and many other prizes.
Tickets may be purchased at local law enforcement offices, by
contacting Melanie Marshall at the Mountain Times Publications
offices located on Industrial Park Drive, or by contacting Wanda
Howell via email to wandahowell2@yahoo.com.
A softball tournament is scheduled for May 30 at the Parks and
Recreation Complex on State Farm Road. Registration is $200
per team due prior to May 29.
Teams will need to be at the fields at 9 a.m. to get play times
and assignments. For more information, or to register a team
from your organization or business, contact Braxton Eggers at
(828) 773-1962 or braxtoneggers@yahoo.com or Jeff Cox at jeff.cox@townofboone.net.
Volunteers are also needed to help with concession sales, officials
and parking.
A benefit motorcycle ride is the works for sometime in June.
For more information regarding the cost, details or to help
volunteer, contact T.J. Profitt at boonepolice228@gmail.com
or Johnny Brown at brownjm@appstate.edu.
A car show is tentatively scheduled for July. Glen Kornhauser
of the Boone Police Department said, Weve been blessed
with the unconfirmed information that the High County Car Show
is having their car show around the same time with the benefits
to go to Bradley [Swift]. Regardless, we will need volunteers.
For more information on the car show, please contact Kornhauser
at glen.kornhauser@townofboone.net, Scott Mackler at scott.mackler@townofboone.net,
or Len Hagaman at lenhagaman@yahoo.com
There are several other fundraisers currently in the works for
later in the summer. Carson Puckett is working to organize a
golf tournament toward the end of the summer.
For more information email Puckett at carson.puckett@townofboone.net.
A couples dance and a possible firearm raffle are being
investigated as possible fundraising options.
Donations of prizes are still welcome for all of the above events
and raffle. Contact Kornhauser or Howell to make a donation
and arrange pick-up or delivery.
Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can do so by mailing
a check to Bradley Swift, care of Glen Kornhauser, Boone Police
Department, 1500 Blowing Rock Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.
I would like to thank everyone in advance that have expressed
an interest in helping Bradley during his time of need,
Kornhauser said.
Bradley, his girlfriend and family thank you for your
prayers and support.
