One-man shows at Green Eggs & Jam Sunday
Thrones, Clang Quartet perform at 4 p.m.

Clang Quartet

Two one-man shows will hit the stage at Green Eggs and Jam in downtown Boone Sunday, offering an afternoon of eclectic, electric music with a positive theme.

The Clang Quartet will open for Thrones for a matinee show at 4 p.m.

Despite the plural nature of their names, each “band” consists of one member – Scotty Irving for the Clang Quartet, and Joe Preston for Thrones.

“It’s not a band,” Irving said, “but a one-man show, and I break it up into three parts with one person performing it. There you go, the absurdist quartet.”

Irving said his act is a combination of three factors – a performance art aspect, which he called the Christian side of the show; noise and electronics, which provide a number of sound sources, and percussion, with miscellaneous drums, “and somewhere along the line, these get thrown into the melting pot, and voila.”Performances fall under the umbrella of Irving’s personal walk as a non-Christian becoming a Christian, he said, “and it’s in a very unorthodox and abstract way, but ultimately that is the main story line.”

Irving has been performing for 12 years, and he acknowledged that sometimes his act works better than he realizes. “I think the best description was when someone said it sounded closer to a weather phenomenon,” he said.

A resident of Stokesdale, Irving has performed several times at Green Eggs & Jam, and he’s particularly excited to open for Thrones’ Joe Preston of Salem, Ore., for an afternoon of music, having played with him once in 2003.

Thrones’ music differs from the Clang Quartet’s, in that it is more song-structured with a friendly helping of electronica. Preston has played in Thrones for 15 years, also performing with such notable acts as Blasphematherion, Harvey Milk, Superconductor and Sunn 0))).

The show begins at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, at Green Eggs & Jam, located at 641 W. King St., No. 1, in downtown Boone on the corner of King and Depot streets. For more information, call (828) 264-3233.
