Lady Huskies Finish Season; Say Goodbye to Six Seniors

In the first round of the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament, the Lady Huskies' softball team fell, 2-0, to

the Starmount Rams.

Both of the runs by Starmount were unearned runs, according to Ashe County Head Coach Bill Key. He said the Lady Huskies' pitcher, Kendra Yearick, did an excellent job for the team and didn't give up any runs.

Starmount saw their opportunity to get around the bases on two passed balls, an Ashe County error and an-other dropped ball in the third inning and again in the fifth. The run in the fifth was the last one of the game, boosting the Rams to the next level of the conference tournament.

Offensively for Ashe, Chandler Christenson went 2 for 3 with Annie Hegar going 1 for 3 and Tasha Faw was 1 for 2.

Starmount finished the season on top of the MVC, tied with Forbush

Ashe County standout, Kendra Yearick, led the team offensively and defensively. She has been the pitcher and ended the season with an ERA under 1.0. Yearick plans to continue her softball career at Peace College in Raleigh. She signed earlier this month with the college which is in the USA South Athletic Conference.

Yearick has been a four year all-conference softball player for Ashe County. She has played softball, volleyball and basketball for four years at Ashe County.

The Lady Huskies' catcher, Annie Hegar, has signed to play at Francis Marion. She signed a letter of intent in November of 2008. The college is in the Peach Belt Conference. Hegar also played on the varsity volleyball team at Ashe County.

In addition to Yearick and Hegar, other seniors who played their last softball game with Ashe County was Tasha Faw, Sara Bumgarner, Ariel Farmer and Kim McNeil.

Ashe County concluded their season, coming up with 6 wins and 13 losses. Coach Bill Key said the girls did a good job this season, but they just had a hard time scoring runs. He commented that Yearick had performed well all season.
