Visual artists from Ashe, Alleghany, Watauga, Wilkes, Grayson
and Johnson Counties were invited to submit
works for The Best of the Blue Ridge, a juried fine art competition
and exhibition held in the Gallery of the Ashe Arts Center in
West Jefferson. The artwork was judged on qualities of concept,
execution of ideas and subject and uniqueness of expression. Alexis
Lavine was the juror for the competition.
There were 93 entries, of which 69 were accepted (48 artists represented).
Cheap Joe's Art Stuff, corporate sponsor of the exhibit, provided
gift certificates for each award, starting with $500 for Best
in Show, $250 for first, $150 for second and $100 for third. Elliot
Coatney of Watauga County won best of show, Marion Cloaninger
of Watauga County won first place, Diane Allen of Johnson County
won second place and Holly Soukup of Watauga County won third
place, Janet Warner and Tonya Bottomley, both from Ashe County,
received honorable mentions. The exhibit will be on display through
November 20.
