Youth Football Coaching Applications Now Available Through Avery County Parks and Recreation Avery Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce the creation of a new football board of operations for the county’s youth football program. Members of this newly formed board are retired Coach Charles “Babe” Howell, Avery High Coach Darryl Brewer, Avery Middle Coach Donnie Johnson, Cranberry Middle Coach Richard Sheppard, and past Clemson All-American John Phillips. Along with the leadership of this board, Avery Parks and Recreation hopes to unify football programs within the county, placing more importance on long term achievement on the field of play. Our goal is for all children entered in the youth programs within the county to continue their careers through the high school level and hopefully beyond. All returning and prospective youth coaches who are interested in coaching at any level prior to middle school will be able to attain an application at the Recreation Department offices at the Rock Gym in Newland during regular business hours. The football board has requested all head coaching applicants have at least three years playing experience at the high school level, but all applications will be considered. Coaching applications will be accepted at the Rock Gym through the closing of business hours July 15th. All coaches will undergo mandatory coaches training through USA Football, and all Recreation Department volunteers also undergo mandatory background screening. We look forward to a great 2009 youth football season.
