Division of Performing Arts Offers Music
and Theatre
Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk has produced some of the
finest actors, dancers and singers to come out of the High Country.
And its no wonder, considering the commitment of that schools
Division of Performing Arts.

Each semester, students in the program stage multiple performances
at the schools two main venues: The Hayes Auditorium and the
Pinnacle Room.
The students of Lees-McRae take on one of the iconic plays
of the American South when they present Tennessee Williams Summer
and Smoke October 31 through November 4. Written in 1948 and originally
titled Chart of Anatomy, the play tells the story of a lonely, unmarried
ministers daughter who is courted by her childhood love, a wild,
undisciplined doctor. The play was made into a popular 1961 film starring
Laurence Harvey, Geraldine Page and Rita Moreno.
Theres no better way to start the holiday season than
with a trip to the Hayes Auditorium to see the annual Candlelight
Christmas Concert. This years event is scheduled for Saturday
and Sunday, December 1 & 2. The Candlelight Christmas Concert
features carols, skits, dancing and much more. Every year Christmas
music lovers come to the show to participate in the big sing-along
finale. With over 50 performers this year, the Candlelight Christmas
Concert is not to be missed. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for
children and students.
Lees-McRae presents James Goldmans play The Lion in
Winter February 15-19. The play takes place at Christmas during the
year 1183. King Henry II of England is gathering with his wife, Eleanor,
whom Henry has let out of prison for the occasion, and their three
sons, Richard Geoffrey and John. With the throne at stake, the family
discusses the sons futures as successors.
With much backbiting and duplicity, the family ends its holiday with
little resolved but much revealed. The Lion in Winter will be staged
at Lees-McRae Colleges Pinnacle Room.
Upcoming spring events at LMC include Swing: The Musical at the Hayes
Auditorium on April 1-6 and Student-Directed One Acts at the Pinnacle
Room April 24-27.
