Winter Travel Safety Tips

The Mountains of Western North Carolina have been a tourist destination for many years. With beautiful scenery, natural attractions, fabulous restaurants, various outdoor activities and an array of accommodations, the High Country still ranks “high” on the list for many vacationers.

Once the decision to visit the area has been made, finding accommodations is the next step in planning a vacation. Many different types of lodging are available.

Finding a hotel room is easier than ever because of the new hotels that have recently been constructed in Boone. Blowing Rock and Avery County boast wonderful hotel accommodations as well. Many hotels are located in close proximity to the High Country’s attractions, such as Grandfather Mountain, the Blowing Rock or Tweetsie.

If a Bed and Breakfast, better known as a “B&B” or an inn is what you’re looking for, you’ll surely find the perfect getaway. The area is full of wonderful establishments offering various accommodations, so whether you’re looking for a rustic, hand-hewn log cabin which can accommodate a large family or a charming romantic Victorian Inn with grand porches for relaxing, the perfect place awaits you.

In addition to the hotels, B&B’s and inns, the High Country is full of rental cabins. Units of all shapes and sizes are available. Whether it is a historic cabin, a country cottage in a private setting or a beautiful new home with luxuries such as a Jacuzzi you’re looking for, many options are available in order to find that “home away from home” feeling.

Bed & Breakfasts/Inns
The area’s inns and “B&B’s”, as they are affectionately called, have recently increased in popularity with visitors from all walks of life. Once thought of primarily as honeymoon destinations or lavish weekend retreats for young lovers, many local inns and B&B’s are now frequented by families, small groups, seniors, and many others who have come to realize that these unique, stylish accommodations can be the foundation of the perfect vacation.
Many of the inns and B&B’s found in the region have been built around century-old structures, such as large family farmhouses and old hotels, giving them an “antique charm” which many have come to associate with the Appalachians. Some are a bit more luxurious, offering Victorian and French Provincial suites with hot tubs and king-sized beds.

Many provide gourmet breakfasts and everything from romantic dinners-for-two to exquisite banquets and catered receptions. Call the inn or B&B of your choice for information on all the services they provide.

Motels/Hotels
The High Country is literally packed with great hotels and motels: From Boone to Blowing Rock to Banner Elk, travelers can easily locate a room to suit every taste.
Prices, services and amenities vary greatly from place to place: On weekends rooms start at approximately $85 and about $60 midweek.

Rental Units/Cabins
One of the best ways to “personalize” your stay is to rent your own home or cabin.
These accommodations are perfect for large families, extended families, groups or for anyone who just needs a lot of room. Whether you are looking for a rustic setting with a reasonable rate or a full-service cabin with all amenities, you can find your own private “vacation” home for the weekend!

Many historic cabins and old homes in the region have been restored and are now available to rent, and the availability of beautiful, new rental homes has increased significantly over the past few years.
Local real estate agents can assist in your search for the perfect rental unit.

Whatever your requirements and expense account, you’ll find something here to suit your taste and your every need. Enjoy your stay!
