Hawksnest Resort
Pick Your Pleasure At Hawksnest Skiing, Snowboarding Or Tubing Just Part Of The Plan

Originally opened in 1964, Hawksnest is looking
forward to another great season. Planning to be
open by Thanksgiving, and with hopes to be open before, Hawksnest’s newest addition is a brand new 500-foot long beginner area with magic carpet and 100 percent snowmaking coverage. With 12 slopes that offer plenty of fun for beginners and advanced skiers alike, Hawksnest has something for everyone. With three beginner slopes, six intermediate trails and three expert runs, Hawksnest is a well-rounded resort that especially prides itself on its ski school. With a devout commitment to beginners, the folks at Hawksnest truly believe that new skiers have a much better experience if they take a lesson. Because of this, they continue to offer free lessons to beginners in January and February when renting equipment; and they also offer free lessons to beginner groups of 15 people or more. Hawksnest Director of Instruction Justin Grimes’ passion goes beyond teaching beginners, with carving lesson plans for intermediate and advanced skiers. Grimes also offers master clinics, and technique specific classes.

Hawksnest really rose to the top of southern skiing years ago when they added ‘Top Gun’ which has been regarded as some of the best-advanced terrain in the high country. With a steady pitch of 38 percent, Top Gun provides an exhilarating challenge for the advanced skier.

Hawksnest also has a noteworthy 15-feature snowboard terrain park with features that were added just last season to keep the High Country’s jibbers and shredders happy. With the biggest tubing area in North Carolina, Hawksnest offers more than just skiing and boarding. Deals like student discounts and ladies night as well as packages like learn to ski/board and the Kiddy Hawk program for kids ages 5-11 will still be available this season.

If being out on the snow gets your appetite raring, the lodge is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. Large windows and a 2,000 square foot deck overlooking the slopes and tubing areas give tired skiers and boarders a place to cool off or warm up, and provides a nice place for those who just like to watch the action.

If skiing, tubing or boarding under the stars tickles your fancy, Hawksnest stays open till midnight on Friday and Saturday nights during their Nighthawk sessions. You’ll also be happy to know that the slopes at Hawknest are renowned for being well groomed. To keep them that way slopes are closed each day for 90 minutes in between day and night sessions.

When asked what he looks forward to most in the 2007-2008 season, Hawksnest General Manager Lenny Cottom simply replied, “Lots of snow.”
